too much fuel??

I just bought a 89 2.6 litre with automatic transmission. The previous owner had the stock carb rebuilt. It sometimes stalls and has a hard time starting again especially when I put it in gear and put on the brake. The carb splatters fuel all over the air filter housing and seems to be way too much fuel for idling. Any ideas?

Convert to fuel injection.

Check your compression.
