ALRIGHT GUYS I GOT A REAR-END OUT OF A 98 2WD EXPEDITION. I'M NEEDING TO GET THE THING NARROWED ABOUT TWO INCHES (ONE INCH OFF EACH SIDE I GUESS). ANYBODY HEVE ANY DETAILS ON HOW HARD THIS PROCESS IS. I'VE NEVER REALLY BEEN AROUND ANYONE WHO'S HAD IT DONE. IS IT POSSIBILITY IT CAN BE DONE AT HOME OR DOES HAVE TO BE DONE AT A SHOP? IF SO? DOES ANYONE KNOW OF ANY SHOPS IN THE NORTH ATLANTA AREA?

I had my 8.8 narrowed at a shop, they had a fixture to secure it to and ensure it did not move. Not sure if there is enough room on either side for the axle to be narrowed or if you need new axles made cause that increases the price fast.

order a set of new axles from moser to the right size and go to home depot and rent a 3"-4" pipe cutter. thats what I did with mine it cost only like $20 to rent the pipe cutter for an hour and thats all you need. then v it out good and puddle a nice weld in there and use your old axles to keep it true

you should be able to find a drag car shop in the metro area, there was parker chassis in columubus that used to do mine, but the owner moved way out in the sticks to his house.... now that i have some machine tools, i'd probably do it myself since i can machine some pieces to hold the tubes true..... you could always send it to moser engineering, they are a good place to get the axles anyways, usually 2 day turnaround...

the ask max forum might be a good place to put this, i'd like to see if he has narrowed a housing before...

Then weld.

It works. I'd rather use a jig, but the materials for one are $$$. But that thing never had a problem.

Seth's got it right if your trying to do it without building a jig. Welding this should be done extremely slow. Don't quinch it either..
