Yeah, it will still rust under the clear. It takes very little moisture to rust metal. The moisture in the clear, mated with the moisture in the air whenever you clear the piece, it will still rust, not as fast but it will still rust. I've been there. I had some pieces like that on my speaker box and they still rusted inside the cab.

my mail box, looks way better in real life, swirl baremetal underneath, powdercoated with candy apple red and clear coated.

dupont makes a metal conditioner called 5717S. We had a hood that had tons of surface rust on it, wiped it down with this stuff and it instantly ate the rust off. After its wiped dry it turns the metal to a flat grayish color but it will prevent rust from forming easily again.

Ive had my blazer in bare metal for several months now, with only one application of WD40...its sat overnight uncovered at a few shows, dew has formed on it and I only have a few small spots of rust where people have touched the metal.

you can use WD 40 but you have to CLEAN THE SHIT out of the metal when you get ready to paint. You have to wash it with Goof Off, and pre cleaner and a couple other things but it will come off and not ruin the paintjob

Some one makes a clear sealer.I seen it on some show ,I just did not catch the name or maker. They were useing it on the aluminum and chrome on boats so they could clear them.Plus the peice did not have to be sanded to stick.

if the vehicle is being kept inside, you should be fine as long as you keep it clean. any time after you touch it, wipe it down with some lacquer thinner, the oils in your hand will stick to the metal and rust first. ive used WD40, and as long as you clean it before you weld on it, your good to go. My 56 F100 has been bare metal for months now in our shop and there are hardly any signs of surface rust on it.
