I see DIB and Grant with these trucks down to bare metal at shows and was just wondering how they kepp them up and from rusting? Ive herd that they use WD40 and was wondering if this is true? If so how much do they put on and how often? If thats not what they use could someone help me and let me know how to keep it up cause im aboutto be taking mine down to that stage, thanks.

Are you thinking of taking your Scion to bare metal?
With all of the plastic on those cars I don't know if you'd be too impressed with the results. You can also achieve a similar effect with paint techniques, which may be a better way to go on a vehicle with that many plastic parts...

But to answer your question, I've always seen WD40 used. I'd imagine you'd have to chemically strip the body to get that oil out of the metal before you paint!

Good luck with your project!

Unless you plan on doing A LOT of body mods, stripping your cab to bare metal isn't the best idea. It is really tough to keep from rusting and the factory paint adheres to the vehicle better than anything that you can apply at home. If it is just for looks don't do it.

There are a few different ways to clean the metal, but it can be a lot of work. WD40 is not the best idea either, because it soaks into the pores of the metal and makes it tougher to get anything to stick to it again. Unless they are using something that they won't tell me about...

Here is a car when we first stripped it and only 2 months later...

also in those pics you need to keep in mind that max is on the west coast.. over here on the east coast that car would be twice that bad just to the freaking humidity we have here

This may not help, but why not just throw down some clear coat? Saw in a magazine where someone added a small amount of color to some clear, its still translucent, so you'll see the metal just with a dash of color. Keep in mind this was for a car show display. The same idea should work for a vehicle? But in your case dont add the color...

haha i kno my blazer got rusty after 3days and then it rained for a month lol didnt help. Baremetal is way better of in the south....usually stuff will stay farely un-rusted if you use like 80grit with no direct water conntact stays rust free for a while.

you spray a bare metal car w/clear it'll yellow, I would rather just have it rust up than to yellow. I agree w/Bio WD40 is a bad idea if you are plannin on paintin

Absolutley do not clear any bare steel ever. It will de laminate for sure. the only way to actually seal bare metal properly and still be able to see the bare metal is to powdercoat clear coat on to it. Trust me the clear coat thing works for a while but it will not last. the only reason these guys go baremetal is to take the truck from the metal up and do all new body work. you never know what is hiding underneath the paint. My truck was soda blasted and sand blasted, not for the bare metal look. but just take off all the old grime with out maring up the steel
