ive been thinking about that in the future for my shop .. but havent check local laws yet..
ive heard in some states (dont know if true or not) that you cant have a home and business out of the same building .... might want to check into that first ...

Personally I would do that but you have to make sure that you have some killer air movement to keep away from the fumes problems.

I don't really paint enough for it to be a concern, The only car that I painted, I just put up a make-shift booth to keep crap out of my paint. Someday I will have an outside booth so that I don't need to worry about it.

Thanks to everyone for all the replies. I will keep everything mentioned in mind as I get into this. Anyone else care to share similar setups or insight?

you can move to sc to build your shop/home..sc doesnt even have laws..they just have suggestions!..You can pretty much do whatever you want compared to other states!

ive been kicking this same idea around and a few of the things ive found is that you dont want the overhead apartment. a buddy of mine put a breakroom/bathroom in the upstairs of his shop and its so damn hot up there you cant use it.he tried to a/c it till he got the first bill and that was over. it would have to be seriously insulated, floors walls and ceiling just to control the heatand a/c bill. also check into the direction the wind usually blows in the area. make sure your apartment is on the windward side and the paint booth is on the opposite so any fumes will be carried away from the apartment.

good points, thanks again guys!!!

what im wondering is, if i go with a 40x100 and partition 40x30 into an apartment, will 40x70 be too much space to start off with? i could add on later down the road possibly if i went with a smaller setup to start with

4000 sqaure feet is a perfect house shop, you can have a 3 room loft upstairs with 4 cars wide and 2 cars deep, with tool underneath your loft, bad ass and only about 50k
