Mysterious/Useless peices?

1983 Caprice Classic Wagon - 305

There is a canister in the front left corner (in front of the wheel well). If I remove it and plug he vacum lines going to it will I be hurting anything.

I am trying to remove all posibilities of a vacum leak.
