I am wanting to do a 5 lug conversion on my 92 dakota. I got the 5 lug axles but the spline is smaller than the 6 lug axles. I was thinking i could cut the larger spline of the 6 lug and weld it the the 5 lug shaft. I have a 110 lincoln mig welder. I know i need to bevel the edges and make damn sure its straight. So my question is should i attempt this myself or take it to a machine shop?

no way in hell should that be done with a 110 mig.

no way should it be done even with a 220 welder. buy some new axles... they will snap if welded, trust me

matter of fact just take your factory 6 lug axles and have them and your drums or rotors redrilled to the 5 lug pattern you want, we do it alllll the time

Moser is pretty reasonable as well if you wanted to go that route.

These guys are right. Welding your own axles is not a good idea. I've seen it done on a beater with nitrous, but keep in mind the the front axle was also made out of fence tubing. Either get your axles drilled or have new ones made.
