Fuckin around mainly for me. All I need to see is a picture of most anything and I can understand it and build it. Live and learn. So far so good, I haven't fucked up much and i'm still alive. LOL SSM and other sites helped me out alot. Also asking alot of questions.
Someone took me under their wing and showed me the basics of working on cars and body work. My first truck at 16 didnt run when I got it. So I was kinda forced into lerning it. After that it was just tearing into them and figuring it out.

my pop's been a mechanic my whole life. Met a dude in Acro when I was 16, picked up a mini-truckin and decided thats what i wanted to do. from there, i read ALOT. Anyone that knows me knows im pretty maticulous about shit these days. if i dont know how to do something, i look it up in reputable sources.
i say if you are mechanically inclined, you can learn just about anything there is to know about customizing. my advise, buy something cheap to start with. grab some tools, they dont have to be pro-grade by any means. just know how to use them and dont be afraid to ask questions. no matter how much you know (or think you know), there is always someone that knows more.
I started out pushing a broom in a 4WD shop. Then I became the wire wheel kid.
I was like 14 then. By 15 I was welding on semi important stuff. Then I started building bikes and got a lot of experience there. Then I felt it was time for a truck. Now its time for some more bikes.
i learned all of my bodywork building lowrider bike frames. if you can do one of those, you can do pretty much anything.
as far as truck stuff, i just read alot about what i wanna do before i atempt it.
tried askin one place if i could just clean shop but that didnt work. but found another place that i might be able to come in and hang around.
Hanging around guys that know what they are doing is the best way if you can't or don't want to go to school for it. I went the backwards way and got into estimating for a bodyshop and then learned bodywork and stuff from the guys in the bodyshop. The best guys I know never went to school for it. I may catch crap for this part but I do recommend at least taking a welding class. I agree that you can teach yourself but you learn alot quicker and learn some things you might never know by taking a course at local trade or vocational school if you have one in your area.
